Mariner Health Care, Inc. provides skilled nursing and long-term health care services in the United States. Its Skilled Nursing Facilities segment provides assistance with one or more activities of daily living, including feeding, bathing, dressing, eating, transportation, and related services. These services are supplemented by rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy. In addition, it provides sub-acute, or intensive, institutional type medical care to patients with complex medical conditions. These specialty units offer, among other things, enteral therapy, intravenous therapy, specialized wound management and ventilator, tracheotomy, cancer, and HIV care. It also offers specialized services in some of its facilities for residents with Alzheimer’s disease. The company’s Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals segment, apart from providing the services of skilled nursing facilities, also provides the relatively high sub-acute clinical needs of patients discharged from a short-term acute-care hospital when the patients’ condition warrants more intensive care than can be provided in a skilled nursing facilities or other setting. As of March 1, 2004, it operated approximately 254 Skilled Nursing Facilities and approximately 8 stand-alone assisted living facilities with approximately 31,400 licensed beds, and 12 skilled nursing facilities with approximately 638 licensed beds. The company markets its services through its marketing professional, payors, and managed care organizations. The company was formerly known as Mariner Post-Acute Network, Inc. and changed its name to Mariner Health Care, Inc. in May 2002. The company was founded in 1977 and is based in Atlanta, Georgia. As of December 10, 2004, Mariner Health Care, Inc. operates as a subsidiary of National Senior Care, Inc.
