The company’s Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals segment, apart from providing the services of skilled nursing facilities, also provides the relatively high sub-acute clinical needs of patients discharged from a short-term acute-care hospital when the patients’ condition warrants more intensive care than can be provided in a skilled nursing facilities or other setting. As of March 1, 2004, it operated approximately 254 Skilled Nursing Facilities and approximately 8 stand-alone assisted living facilities with approximately 31,400 licensed beds, and 12 skilled nursing facilities with approximately 638 licensed beds.
